Howdie!!!
Sunday, October 10, 2010

Even though in the previous post I mentioned that I'm so free nowadays, well....apparently I'm not so free anymore. Nonetheless, I'll try my best to blog about new, AWESOME manga which I've read and share it with you all :D

Recently I just bought Gakuen Ouji vol 10 (this is the most recent volume published) and a bunch of other shoujo manga which I haven't even gotten to read yet. But I really want to blog about Aozora Yell and the rest so...let's just see how often I can put aside some time to blog. Maybe in the future, I won't bother to write about every single volume of the series but just an overview of it.

Futsumashi na Yome desu ga volume 1
Saturday, October 09, 2010

Title: 祓魔師な嫁ですが。
Alt Title: Futsumashi na Yome desu ga
Volume: 1
Author: Kazato Nori
Rating:

Synopsis:
On the way home from his part time job, 16-year-old Hirazono Satsuki picked up a stray girl lying in the dumpster. The girl is called Riine (though it's written as Riene in her name card) and she is an exoscist who's looking for a girl who had helped her out in the past, Satsuki-chan.

Well, that 'girl' turned out to be the current Satsuki-kun. Apparenlty he looked quite girly when he was young so Riine had mistaken him as a girl. When Riine was still training to be an exorcist, her master accidentally turned her into a boar who got picked up by the kind Satsuki. Riine had come back to repay his kindness but instead she kept getting him into trouble eg. magically entering into a marriage contract with him. Besides that, she is also a total pervert who liked to peep at him, sniffed and sneaked into his bed at night. Even so, when she left him (because he was so irritated by her), he was surprised at how lonely he felt and finally let her to stay with him.

Personal thoughts:
Ok, the story is quite confusing. The sole reason I bought this manga is because Satsuki looks a lot like Zero from Vampire Knight (whom I dearly love). Actually, the characters in this manga do resemble Vampire Knight characters...Riine herself looks a bit like Yuki. Then, Satsuki's school uniform design kind of resemble Zero's uniform also. Anyway, aside from that, I think this manga is a little bit pointless. The heroine is an exorcist who's also a magic user (who are you kidding???!!!). I think the only appeal in this manga is the guys are quite hot but aside from that....meh.

Otome Youkai Zakuro Volume 2

Title: おとめ妖怪ざくろ
Alt Title: Otome Youkai Zakuro
Volume: 2
Author: Hoshino Riri
Rating:

Synopsis:
The hanyou girls were invited to attend a ball with the military personnels. Zakuro made a big fuss over it because she didn't want to wear a dress but Agemaki told her that the dress suit her just fine and she (blushingly) thanked him. Agemaki told her to call him 'Kei' but she found it impossible.

Agemaki had to leave Zakuro alone for a while because he was called by his higher up. During this time, two military bastards came over and insulted Zakuro for being a youjin. Though Agemaki came back and stopped those bastards, but she hit him several times on the chest and cried. He hugged her and apologized (for leaving her alone).

In the mean time, Ganryuu and the hanyou twin, Houzuki and Bonbori encountered a spider demon in one of the room. Bonbori was almost killed but Zakuro came just in time to save her. The spider demon mentioned that she knew Zakuro's mother (Tsukuhane) but before Zakuro could get anymore information from her, she disappeared.

The next chapter is about the twin telling Ganryuu about their past so I'm going to skip that to the part where Agemaki invited Zakuro to his house. His parents disliked youkai so Zakuro was forced to hide her fox ears in a bun. He told Zakuro that when he was young, he saw a youkai in his house which might be the reason why he was so scared with youkai. But Zakuro found out that the youkai was actually Agemaki's dead cat. Even though Agemaki couldn't see it but apparently his little sister, Kumiko, could. Before Zakuro left, Agemaki's mother gave her a necklace and hinted to her that she knew Zakuro was a youjin. On the way home, Zakuro mentioned that Agemaki's household is strange but she was glad that she came to visit.

Personal thoughts:
Overall I liked this volume :D There are romantic moments between Agemaki and Zakuro and heavy hints of Zakuro's feelings towards Agemaki when she got so jealous seeing Agemaki together with his maid (who has a huge crush on him). Besides that, the chapter about the spider demon is also a very important link to the story's climax.

Otome Youkai Zakuro Volume 1

Title: おとめ妖怪ざくろ
Alt Title: Otome Youkai Zakuro
Volume: 1
Author: Hoshino Riri
Rating:

Synopsis:
The setting of the manga is alternate Meiji era (one of my favourite era) where youkai (demons) and the humans coexist together. The military opened up a new department called Ministry of Spirit Affairs and appointed 3 military personnels to work alongside the youkai, although in this case instead of youkai, the girls are all hanyou (half demon).

Our heroine, Zakuro fell in love at first sight with her new partner, the charming Agemaki Kei but shortly after they introduced each other, Zakuro found out that Agemaki is actually a loser who's scared with youkai.

On one occasion, Zakuro and Agemaki were assigned a mission which require them to travel to another village. They ended up sleeping together in a cramped room but Zakuro used pebbles to draw a line between their futon and forbid Agemaki from crossing the line. Their mission was to exterminate a demon which had been eating the village women and children (because their bodies are softer....ugh). Zakuro managed to kill it but Agemaki felt that he was a useless partner because she had to keep rescuing him all the time. However Zakuro said that wasn't true.

Besides Agemaki, there is another military personnel called Yoshinokazura Riken who's partnered with Susukihotaru. They had a mission to retrieve a cursed sword from an antique shop. However when Susukihotaru held it, she was possessed by the sword and tried to kill Riken. Luckily though, Riken managed to stop her. Susukihotaru was so distraught for injuring Riken but he said that he was glad she was safe.

Personal thoughts:
Notice this is the only manga that I rate 5 stars so far? Lovely art, excellent plot and not many cliche scenes. I also love the characters' names especially Riken and Ganryuu (aaaah so lovely!!!). I'm not going to write much details for the next 3 volumes because I don't want to spoil the anime (which is a must watch!). Anyway, my favourite couples so far other than the main couple will be Susukihotaru x Riken. They're just SO lovely together. Susuki is initially scared of Riken because he is big and tall but he got down on his knees and asked her if she was still scared of him in that position and she blushed (who won't???!!!). Will elaborate more about them in the next volume.

Re-opening of Blog
Friday, August 06, 2010

At loooooong last, I decided to re-open my blog. This is because of several reasons:

1) I'm so free nowadays and I end up spending most of my free time reading manga
2) Nowadays it's getting harder and harder to find manga that I want to read online so I decided to BUY them instead
3) Even if I do manage to find them online, it's usually a zillion years later ie. I don't mind buying manga if that means I'll get to read them right now
4) Reading raw manga will of course help me improve my Japanese (especially the Kanji)
5) I know you've heard this million of times before but really, if you really like the manga, you should support the artist by purchasing their books

So because of those reasons, I will continue this blog and do some major changes, one of which is that I will not be posting anymore manga download links. Really sorry about that, but you can always find them elsewhere online. Or even better, at the bookstores! I'll blog about some good online shops where you can purchase your manga :D

Shoujo Shounen Gakkyudan Volume 1
Thursday, August 05, 2010

Title: 少女少年学級団
Alt Title: Shoujo Shounen Gakkyudan
Volume: 1
Author: Fujimura Mari
Rating:

Synopsis:
The main character, Nakatani Haruka is used to be mistaken as a boy. She loves baseball above all things but after she transferred to a new elementary school, she found it difficult to get a long with the boys in her class, especially with the pitcher of the boys' team, Tanabe Wataru.

Wataru thinks that girls are not suited to play baseball and even threw away Haruka's precious baseball memento, which caused Haruka to beat the crap out of him. Like what a traditional Japanese would do, Haruka was forced to go to Wataru's house to apologize and that's when she met Wataru's older brother, Ken.

Ken, being the big brother here, totally charmed Haruka. Moreover, he used to play baseball and even went all the way to Koushien too (though he stopped playing baseball because of injury)! Unlike Wataru who's always looking down on Haruka, his brother Ken is the total opposite. Haruka is frustrated that she won't be able to go to Koshien just because she is a girl. However, Ken advised her that she can still be a professional woman baseball player, which made Haruka really happy now that she can continue her dream.

Despite that, her relationship with Wataru is not getting any better but when Wataru became a bully target in school due to his selfishness (and childishness), Haruka is the one who helped him out and that's when he started liking her instead! Unfortunately for Wataru though, his best friend, Kazu is apparently in love with Haruka too. As if it's not bad enough, Haruka herself is totally in love with Ken!

Personal thoughts:
I bought this manga expecting something like Kodomo no Omocha's love-hate relationship between the two young characters (Haruka & Wataru), and I never expected a major twist in the form of hot & mature high schooler, Ken!.

After reading volume 1, I was hesitating whether reading this manga is worth continuing because no matter how you see it, it's very unlikely that young Haruka will ever end up with big brother Ken (by the way, in the manga Haruka called him "Ken-nii"). Ken is being extra nice to Haruka because he is used to playing the big brother role to Wataru. His affection towards Haruka will never go beyond the boundary of brotherly love.

Based on my experience with shoujo manga plot, this means that in the end, either Haruka will just a suffer a huge heartbreak or she just realised that her feelings for Ken is all a puppy crush and she ended up liking Wataru.

Terminology:
Koshien is very prestigious baseball tournament in Japan. In every high school baseball manga you read, the teams will definitely aiming for Koushien. I'm a huge fan of high school baseball manga. I recommend you to read Ookiku Furikabutte or Cross Game.

Tenchi Shinmei Volume 1
Wednesday, August 04, 2010

Title: 天地神鳴!
Alt Title: Tenchi Shinmei
Volume: 1
Author: Amano Hirume, Hinachi Nao
Rating:

Synopsis:
Shio has always wanted to be a normal high school girl (an overly familiar line, I know) but ever since young, she has the unique power to see ghosts/spirits/demon, and for some reason, she's always chased by these spirits. One day when she was chased by an ugly spirit (which come out from a bush, seriously), she was saved by a strange black cat. I said strange because it is wearing some sort of necklace. And it can also talk.

Apparently that black cat isn't any ordinary cat but is, in fact, the God of Thunder, Raijin. He is trapped in the form of a cat however when he sucks spiritual power from Shio (via kissing!!!), he'll turn back to his original form, a super hot guy!!!

With Shio being Rai's (that's his name) source of spiritual power a.k.a his daily meal, he promised to always protect her from the evil spirits. Seeing Rai's effort to protect her, even if that means injuring himself, she began to open up to him and let him use her spiritual power (means more kissing sessions).

The first few chapters are about the different types of youkai (demons) who tried to disrupt Shio's life but ended up exterminated by Rai in the end (and in a good way too). The big twist comes towards the end of the book when Rai's brother, Fuu (the God of Wind), came to avenge Rai for killing their mother?!!!

Personal thoughts:
I really really like this manga!!! Even though it has many common shoujo plot, I always respect mangaka who can draw beautiful and ugly things at the same time. The youkai in this manga is really quite ugly & scary. It kind of reminds me of Inuyasha for some reason.

The first volume really ends with such a cliff hanger and the next volume will only be published next year!!! I really can't wait to read the next volume. I hope this manga will be quite long-running because nowadays it's rare to come across such a good shoujo manga.

Kirara no Hoshi Volume 1
Tuesday, August 03, 2010

Title: キララの星
Alt Title: Kirara no Hoshi
Volume: 1
Author: Morinaga Ai
Rating:

Synopsis:
Kirara Ayumi is the only daughter of a legendary and very beautiful actress Akizuki Youko. However she doesn't seem to inherit her mother's beauty nor the talent to act. Her mother died when she was young and now she is forced to help her dad run his (dying) talent agency company while he went off in search of the company's only star, Reona, who has eloped with her new boyfriend.

Poor Ayumi, whose only wish is to live a normal high school life (let's see how many times I must mention this line), is left to find a new star to stop the debt collectors from banging on their door.

Ayumi's new hope is Hoshi Hikaru (seriously this is his real name), her quiet & bespectacled classmate who turns out to be a super duper good-looking guy if he doesn't wear his glasses. Ayumi tried her best to convince uninterested Hikaru to be a star (by forcefully taking photos of him and stalking him), and she only succeed after threatening him that she'll tell everyone in school his secret (of being such a hot guy) if he doesn't work for her.

It seems that ever since young, Hikaru has been constantly harrassed/kidnapped/stalked/bullied by people around him for being so handsome. Even his best friend left him because the girl he likes confessed to Hikaru instead. To prevent such things from happening again, Hikaru wears spectacles and tried to hides his aura in school so that no one will notice him. When Ayumi heard about this, she promised that she'll protect him no matter what so he should co-operate with her to become a star.

Despite that, Hikaru still refused to work for her even after he was kicked out of his apartment for illegally taking in a pet. But, like most of Morinaga sensei's character, Hikaru is strangely attracted to Ayumi's scary (super ugly) cat and finally agreed to stay with her.

At the end of the book, Ayumi managed to find a small role for Hikaru in a drama but she was somehow dragged into it when the director told her to act as Hikaru's girlfriend. Worse, he even demanded that they kiss on screen. Ayumi started to panic but Hikaru pulled her and kissed her!!

Personal thoughts:
Another manga with such a cliff hanger end and the next volume is next year!!! Grrrr....Well, in any case, I've come to like this series just like all of Morinaga sensei's other works. Though the plot is very very VERY common but I still enjoy reading it! Her manga is always hilarious :D
